As local journalism faces major shifts, the Minneapolis Times is expanding—and inviting local reporters, community advocates, and storytellers to shape our next chapter.

The Minneapolis Times has grown significantly since its inception in September of 2024. While our primary focus remains Minneapolis, Hennepin County, and, to a lesser extent, Minnesota politics, our growth has reinforced an important lesson. To understand Minneapolis, we need to cover far more than politics alone.
Unfortunately, many local newspapers, once the primary source of community news, continue to close. At the same time, the Minnesota Star Tribune has faced layoffs, retrenchment, and uncertainty as it considers a new ownership model. These changes make it even more difficult for citizens to obtain the information they need to be informed participants in a democracy.
Over the last 18 months, we have steadily expanded our coverage. Don Allen has joined us as our Education Editor, and we are increasing our reporting on schools and education. In recent days, we have also published more stories on business in Minneapolis, and we want to do much more in that area.
We are actively looking for writers who can cover business, entrepreneurship, development, and the local economy. Minneapolis is a vibrant business community, and there are countless stories that deserve greater attention.
Sports is another area where we see tremendous opportunity. Minnesota has one of the nation’s strongest sports cultures, but too much reporting focuses only on games and scores. We would like to expand our coverage of the business of sports, including the economic impact of teams, facilities, and sporting events.
Just as important, women’s sports remain significantly under covered. The Twin Cities have one of the country’s richest collections of women’s professional, collegiate, and amateur sports organizations. Their athletes, businesses, and communities deserve much greater attention, and we are looking for writers who share that passion.
We also hope to build a network of community correspondents throughout Minneapolis. Every City Council district has its own issues, priorities, and stories. We are looking for individuals who can regularly report on the politics, neighborhoods, and events that shape their communities.
Minnesota’s media also needs stronger coverage of the diverse communities that make Minneapolis what it is. We welcome writers who can report on issues affecting African American, Latino, immigrant, and other communities whose voices too often receive insufficient attention.
We are also committed to presenting a wide range of political viewpoints. We invite progressives, including those aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America, to write for us. We likewise encourage Republicans, conservatives, and others across the political spectrum to contribute. We are interested not only in opinion pieces and commentaries, but also in well-reported journalistic articles.
This message from the Editor in Chief is an invitation. We want the Minneapolis Times to be your newspaper. We want it to reflect your concerns, your experiences, and your perspectives.
There are countless stories waiting to be told. Business leaders, elected officials, nonprofit organizations, educators, members of the religious community, neighborhood advocates, and everyday citizens all have important voices that deserve to be heard.
As we move toward the 2026 elections, we hope to foster the kind of thoughtful debate that healthy democracies require. Our goal is to provide a forum where ideas can be exchanged, issues can be explored, and readers can hear from a broad range of voices across Minneapolis.
If you have an idea for a story, would like to pitch a regular column, or simply have something you believe should be shared with the community, we encourage you to contact us. Help us build a newspaper that truly represents Minneapolis.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Minneapolis Times

I’m a former MN and enjoy reading the Minneapolis Times. I especially appreciate the attempts at unbiased reporting…and reasoned thought. I would like to read less of DSA and more conservative perspectives. It is a thing everywhere but Minnesota! Anyway good luck finding writers and expanding…good reporting is a rare commodity.
