In a landscape of toxic ideology, Sheriff Dawanna Witt chooses results over rhetoric. Her commitment to public safety proves why professional competence must outweigh performative politics in Hennepin County.

In the modern political landscape of the Twin Cities, facts have become optional, and ideological purity has become the only metric for success. The latest victim of this toxic environment is Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt. For weeks, a vocal contingent of activists and grandstanding politicians have been peddling a narrative that Witt has “sold out” the community by striking a backroom deal with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Let’s be clear: These accusations are not just unsubstantiated. They are flat-out lies.
The outrage machine began churning after Witt met with federal officials—including representatives from ICE—to discuss the rules of engagement for “Operation Metro Surge.” To the professional activist class, the mere act of sitting in a room with a federal agent is a hanging offense. To the rest of us who actually want to be able to walk to our cars at night without getting carjacked, it’s called doing your job.
Sheriff Witt has been crystal clear. She has repeatedly stated that no deals were made, no policies were changed, and the Hennepin County “separation ordinance”—which limits cooperation with federal immigration enforcement—remains fully intact. She isn’t “collaborating” on deportations; she is collaborating on public safety.
If the critics have receipts, they should show them. Instead, they offer nothing but “vibes” and hearsay. They are asking the public to prioritize their paranoia over a proven leader’s track record.
And let’s talk about that track record. During Operation Metro Surge, while local politicians were busy hand-wringing and debating “root causes,” Sheriff Witt was actually managing the chaos. Under her leadership, the Sheriff’s Office has stepped into the vacuum left by depleted municipal police departments. She has focused on high-intensity patrols and targeting the violent offenders who actually make our neighborhoods unsafe. She has handled the pressure of a high-stakes, multi-agency operation with a level of professionalism that is, frankly, rare in this county.
Witt has earned the benefit of the doubt. She is a veteran law enforcement officer who knows that you cannot tackle transnational crime, human trafficking, or the flow of fentanyl without talking to federal partners. To suggest that these necessary professional meetings are a “betrayal” is not only intellectually dishonest; it’s dangerous. It signals to every law enforcement leader in the state that if you dare to cooperate with the federal government to stop violent criminals, the radical left will attempt to incinerate your reputation.
The activists demanding Witt’s head are the same voices who have consistently prioritized performative “sanctuary” politics over the literal lives of the people being shot in our streets. They want a Sheriff who is a political puppet, not a public servant.
Sheriff Witt is refusing to play that game. She is choosing to be a Sheriff for the whole county, not just the loudest voices on social media. She is doing the hard, thankless work of cleaning up the mess that years of failed policy allowed to fester.
It’s time for the local political establishment to grow a backbone and stand behind her. To the activists: If you have evidence of a “deal,” produce it. Otherwise, sit down and let the Sheriff do the job we elected her to do.
Sheriff Witt doesn’t need a lecture on community trust from people who are more interested in scoring points than solving crimes. She needs the space to lead. Give her a break—and while you’re at it, give the truth a chance to breathe.
Watch the press conference:

An excellent piece about Witt.

Witt and O’Hara have been the adults in the room for a while now. Appreciated
Agreed!
Appreciate the perspective. Thanks for writing this.
More of a PR piece than meaningful analysis. No justification for meeting with Homan four times if Witt was not trying to make deal. The suspicion was justified. The article also leaves out the Hennepin County Sheriff’s mass arrests and excessive force against protesters outside the Whipple Building. Such actions establish the sheriff’s support for the federal occupation over the community.
YES to this well written piece and comments!

Thank you for this. Moments after listening to this press conference I sent a short note to her office, thanking Sheriff Witt for being such a high-integrity public servant, and expressing my dearest wish that we had more like her.
Especially since she has shown her mettle under fire, Sheriff Witt may prove to be the best Sheriff we have had. I can remember Hennepin County sheriffs back to Donald Dwyer, and I can’t think of any who have had to prove their competence and integrity in an environment as tough as the 70-day ICE occupation.
As to the activists presenting evidence of a deal, I am quite confident this will be forthcoming. I expect to see it on the same day Robin Wonsley produces her evidence that Mayor Frey threatened to withdraw services from her Ward.
Amen, David.
