Ilhan Omar’s solo vote against Ukraine aid highlights a costly pattern of putting personal ideology above Minnesota’s 5th District.

Ilhan Omar has never been afraid to stand alone. Unfortunately for the people of the 5th District of Minnesota, that position often includes standing in direct opposition to them and the positions that they support. It’s one thing to believe so strongly in something that you make known your unwillingness to temper your advocacy. It’s something else entirely to divorce yourself from your party, your people, and the principles that guide your responsibility to represent others above yourself.
As most know, on June 4th, Omar was the ONLY Democrat to vote against the bill that the House passed that would provide new military assistance to Ukraine and impose sanctions on Russia. The tactics that the world has imposed in its allied effort to end the inhumane Russian aggression against Ukraine have been sweeping and broad. Some efforts have been more effective than others, some appear more partisan than principled, but the one constant is that we are resolved to keep trying. But never before has any one person opted out in the face of unanimous political agreement and in spite of overwhelming constituency support.
This may be shocking news to the many reporters from various media outlets who immediately wrote articles about it, emphasizing Omar’s departure from the norm, but it shouldn’t come as any surprise to the members of the 5th District. The one consistent message from Omar has been that her personal agenda trumps her representation of her constituents. Whether it is abolishing the police, rallying against Israel, making anti-American proclamations, showing pro-Somali tendencies, completely failing to introduce any meaningful legislation, hiding from the press and the public, or playing the victim card, the race card, the gender card, or the religious minority card—Omar’s singular accomplishment is the fact that she has learned how to rig the primary system in a solidly Democratic district that allows her to automatically get elected over and over again.
For someone whose list of negative issues is much longer than her list of accomplishments, it’s amazing that she continues to purposefully draw attention to herself. Whether we look at whether or not she was directly or indirectly involved in the massive fraud surrounding the Feeding Our Future program; the number of times she has been censured by Congress; foreign leaders who praise her for her support of them over her support of America and Americans; financial accounting errors; funneling millions in campaign money to her new husband/political advisor; comments and tweets deemed anti-Semitic; comments and tweets deemed anti-American; or her being removed from committees and censured by her colleagues—if she were also a great speaker and advocate on behalf of the needs and concerns of the people of the 5th District of Minnesota, it might be a great story and worth the backlash… but she’s just not.
The plain truth is, Omar has accomplished almost nothing. Her largest points of pride all stem from taking positions that 100% of Democrats already take anyway: supporting a woman’s right to choose—we all do that; supporting a universal healthcare program—we all do that; supporting tolerance and economic diversity, environmental justice, and climate change reform—we all do that. Omar has become very good at propping up unanimously Democratic issues that she claims she has personally championed. It’s time to call her out for the issues where she has abandoned the Democrats and the people of the 5th District of Minnesota.

This attack is full of unsubstantiated innuendo. In my experience, Ilhan Omar and her office have been very responsive to constituent needs and I have watched her interact very amiably with people of all ethnicities in her district for decades. The list of alleged definicies here uses the word “deemed” repeatedly. This is basically the Trump tactic of flinging all kinds of manufactured and/or unproven charges at a perceived enemy.
While I may not agree with absolutely every one of her votes, I am very proud to have her continue to represent me in Congress and will remember to vote for her in the primary next month.

She hates America and yet she gets voted into office.
It has been continuously embarrassing to live in her district. Unfortunately I do not see a significant electable opponent against her this time around. If there were I’d have their sign in my yard
This is what the DFL harvests for it’s slavish devotion to identify politics. Anyone who criticizes Omar is promptly written off. Because of accidents of birth, she is viewed as a saint. Few of the DFL lemmings are willing to say, “Is the criticism valid”? Long forgotten is Martin Luther King’s simple but incredibly profound statement about judging people on the content of their character only. If the DFL were to do that, Omar wouldn’t survive the coming primary.
BTW, the last time I voted for a Republican for a major office was 1994.
I have to ask: what percentage of the 5th district population are Muslim and/or voters of Somali descent? Combined with the number of apologist voters, it will be some time before anyone else will unseat Ms. Omar.
Say it louder for the people in the back!
Hiding from the press and the public? You’ve got to be kidding. Omar holds monthly town hall meetings. You may remember she was even attacked at a recent one. I attended one and she patiently answered a long line of questioners, even going over the allotted time. I also attended a gathering at a coffee shop a few months ago where she made an effort to greet each of the 50-plus attendees personally. Contrast that with the Republican members of Congress who hide in their offices, refusing to meet the public. It just might be that Omar keeps winning because she makes an effort to reach out to her constituents.
