Rainville spills the coffee on what’s really going on behind the scenes at City Hall.

If you’ve been watching the Minneapolis City Council lately, you know it often plays out less like practical local governance and more like an intense, ideological drama. On a recent episode of News from the Crabby Coffee Shop / Garage Logic, Ward 3 Council Member Michael Rainville pulled zero punches. He sat down to spill the coffee on what’s really going on behind the scenes at City Hall. From the escalating fights over police overtime to the bureaucratic roadblocks completely stalling affordable housing, we’re breaking down Rainville’s unfiltered reality check on the state of Minneapolis.”
What’s discussed:
-
Minneapolis City Council Friction: Council Member Rainville pulls back the curtain on the deep political and ideological divides within the current council, detailing how partisan infighting is actively derailing city operations.
-
The Police Overtime & Standby Pay Dispute: A critical look at the budgetary and operational friction surrounding the Minneapolis Police Department. Rainville addresses the logistics of police staffing, overtime demands, and the policy battles surrounding law enforcement compensation.
-
Affordable Housing Failures: An insider critique of the city’s approach to affordable housing, focusing on how well-intentioned policies are falling short in practice and failing to meet the actual needs of the community.
-
Rebuilding Roadblocks: A status check on major municipal development and recovery projects. The discussion outlines the specific legislative and bureaucratic hurdles that are preventing the city from efficiently rebuilding and moving forward.

After watching a significant portion of this video, I was not impressed that anything very damning had been revealed about socialist city council members. The clips of council members asking questions about the police budget did not seem to be revealing anything very reprehensible about them. They were polite and seemed to me to be carrying out what is called “due diligence” in business culture. I did find the discussion of the high cost of rehabilitation of old housing revealing but I wasn’t sure that the socialist members of the council were responsible for that or not. The headline for this piece in the Minneapolis Times was misleading. All this “embarassment” over the socialist city council members seems to me to reveal bias and resentment largely arising because the old boy (and girl) network which used to run the city is no longer completely in charge.

Well, this is further confirmation that voters are the victims of their own judgement. We have City Council members in the majority, with neither the life experience, work background or intelligence to serve the public’s interests.
All of this public friction has been brewing since Lisa Bender left the council 2021. The city council and committee meetings are available to watch, and it is embarrassing how the DSA members treat city staff and city council members not aligned with the DSA. When Lisa Bender was president, the disagreement was there, but the interactions during meetings were professional and I can’t remember the council ever being rude and snarky to staff under Lisa’s reign. Some of these council meetings under Elliott Payne are shocking for their unprofessionalism – this would never be tolerated in a corporate setting.
I agree with you, it disgraceful. Council Member that breaks decorum, use inappropriate language should be fined. The back-room discussions about position and leadership speaks to the lack of clarity and transparency the DSA scream to value. They don’t listen to their own constituency about what they value. Staff interactions and “administrative directives” are nothing more than a stalling tactic and a way to punish staff for having a policy or process by which to solve problems falling under their departments. Council should not ride roughshod over each other with an eye on the bullseyes for someone they disagree with. Payne should go back and watch Alice Rainville, Jackie Cherryhomes, Sharon Sayles Belton to really grasp how its done. The circus is embarrassing. Keep that veto pen out Mr. Mayor
